Summary of the Authorising Engineer role:
Our client is seeking a qualified and experienced Authorising Engineer (Electrical) to oversee the safe operation and maintenance of electrical systems across a major building services contract based in the North of England. This role is critical to ensuring compliance with statutory regulations, British Standards, and company procedures regarding electrical safety, particularly within commercial, healthcare, or critical infrastructure environments.
Authorising Engineer Deliverables / Outcomes (include but are not limited to):
Act as the primary technical authority on all electrical safety matters across the contract.
Develop, review, and approve safe systems of work, including Permits to Work (PTW) and High Voltage (HV)/Low Voltage (LV) switching schedules.
Carry out audits and inspections of electrical systems, maintenance activities, and compliance documentation.
Provide expert advice and support to project and site teams regarding electrical safety regulations and best practice.
Investigate electrical incidents or near misses, identifying root causes and recommending corrective actions.
Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and commissioning of new electrical installations.
Liaise with clients, statutory authorities, and internal stakeholders to ensure full compliance with legislation and contractual obligations.
Skills, Experience & Qualifications:
Degree or HNC/HND in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
Chartered Engineer status (CEng) or working towards it (desirable).
Authorising Engineer (Electrical) status, with a proven track record in a similar role.
Extensive knowledge of relevant regulations and standards, including:
- Electricity at Work Regulations 1989
- BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations)
- HTM 06-02
5-10 years’ experience working on complex building services systems in commercial or critical environments, ideally with experience in NHS-authorised engineering roles.
Excellent understanding of risk management, safety systems, and operational controls.
Strong leadership and mentoring skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication.
High level of attention to detail and accuracy.
Ability to influence and educate stakeholders on electrical safety.
Competence in using computer-based systems for documentation and reporting.

Start Date: Immediate
Duration: 6 – 12 months
Day Rate: Competitive day rate
